The Rainbow Warrior has departed Dunedin and is heading for Stewart Island.

The Green Peace vessel has been in Port Chalmers over the weekend, as part of a tour of New Zealand to celebrate the Government’s off-shore drilling ban and to promote clean energy.

More than five thousand people visited the vessel as part of public open days during the tour.

Captain Fernando Romo says the response from New Zealanders to its visit has been heartwarming.

He says they always feel very welcome in New Zealand but it's been even better this trip.

Captain Romo says he was also impressed with Dunedin’s welcome, with a lot of people on top of the hill.

Following the Rainbow Warrior’s visit to Stewart Island, it's scheduled to head to Australia’s south coast where the crew will campaign against oil exploration in the Great Australian Bight.
