The armed offenders squad swarmed a home in Oamaru today after a man was seen wielding a gun in public.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy says the AOS and uniformed officers were called to a property in Wansbeck Street at about eleven AM.

The man was arrested without incident and taken into custody.

A witness says about twelve AOS members were involved in the operation at the house.

They shouted instructions at the occupants, and at least two were handcuffed and ordered to sit on the footpath outside the property.

A reporter earlier witnessed four police cars parked outside the house and officers were seen coming and going.

Tees Street in Oamaru was also blocked to traffic for a time.
