There was barking, laughter and general chaos at the Wanaka Sled Dog Festival at Snow Farm today.

The early morning sun basked the trails at Snow Farm on the second day of the festival.

Race co-ordinator Sarah Campbell says the weather and snow conditions were absolutely perfect.

The event is the only sled dog event in New Zealand held on snow.

Normally racing is done on dry land in forests where wheeled rigs and scooters are used.

Campbell says the uniqueness of the event is a big attraction for many, and the only downside is they have to start at sunrise so the dogs don't overheat.

The Wanaka Sled Dog Festival finishes today.
