Female kea on Mount Aspiring are going to be closely monitored by conservationists this summer.

About five nesting sites in the East and West Matukituki Valleys will be captured on camera in January.

The Kea Conservation Trust is aiming to find out what's eating kea eggs and chicks.

The native mountain parrots are vulnerable to predators.

Trust members are planning to catch female kea and attach transmitters to them, in order to locate their nests.

Then cameras will be placed in and out of nests to capture breeding progress and predator activity.

The $20,000 project is being funded by Auckland Zoo and a private local donor.
