Butterflies at Otago Museum are being left to die in a $2.5 million dollar upgrade of Discovery World and the Tropical Forest.

The Museum says no new butterflies will be released during construction and those in the forest will be left to live out their natural lives.

Birds and tarantulas will remain in an animal-friendly construction zone.
