It was a case of deja vu for the Department of Conservation near Makarora today.

A fleet of about five helicopters spread bait over 38 thousand hectares of the Makarora Valley to prepare rats, mice, stoats and possums for a follow up 1080 poison drop in a week or so.

The department did a similar pre-feed two years ago at a cost of more than one hundred and eighty thousand dollars but was unable to follow through with a poison drop. The poisoning programme is part of Doc's Battle for our Birds campaign, designed to help safeguard native bird and bat species.
