A car ended up in a roadside ditch near the top of Dunedin's Northern Motorway on Friday.

The accident happened at around 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

The car had slid into the ditch on Waitati Valley Road at Leith Saddle.

Police said the driver was unable to get out of the vehicle due to the driver's door being against the ditch.

Emergency services freed the driver who was assessed at the scene and did not have to be transported to hospital.
