Fire has significantly damaged a house in south Invercargill.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Ness Street just before 2.30pm.

Three fire trucks were at the scene, where a road block was put in place by police.

Smoke was billowing out of the house as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

Onlookers were battling the thick smoke and talking about how to help the family living at the address.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
