A Port Chalmers fisherman is recovering from an ordeal near Heyward Point, where he was rescued after leaping from a burning vessel.

The recreational fisherman grounded the boat on rocks before leaping to safety, and was flown to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries.

He got into trouble off Heyward Point just before noon.

The bay where he leapt off the boat is surrounded by cliffs, thwarting a land rescue.

The Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter was sent to the scene and the man was winched to safety.

Authorities have been dealing with the burning wreck and are planning to tow it to higher ground.
