A young man has been spied stealing a charity collection jar, thanks to an in-store surveillance camera.

Crystal-clear footage of the theft of a jar of cash from the Waikouaiti Fish Inn at the beginning of the month has been released by the owner, in the hope of identifying the culprit.

The video shows the man pacing around while waiting for his order of fish and chips.

He's wearing a black singlet and sporting distinctive tattoos.

While trying to use a plastic straw to clean his teeth, he casually moves the honesty jar down to the floor and out of sight of staff.

Despite spotting the surveillance camera, he takes his order and leaves the shop... but after staff have turned their backs, he darts back in to grab the jar of money before leaving a second time.

The jar contained about a hundred and twenty dollars in cash and police say the offender is yet to be identified.
