A local woman's petition to save a historic Dunedin church from demolition is receiving hundreds of signatures.

The Andersons Bay Presbyterian church is closed, while its owners ponder the viability of undertaking necessary earthquake strengthening.

The Silverton Street church dates back to 1914, when the first service was held in the building.

Parishioner numbers have been dwindling and repairs are considered too costly.

But one Dunedin resident has launched a public petition to save the historic facility.

Her efforts have already been supported by hundreds of people, who've signed the petition at the central city library.

The document is due to be sent to the Southern Presbytery in coming months.
