Traffic lights are to be installed at a busy intersection in Invercargill, following public consultation.

The Invercargill City Council approved the work after assessing several options to decrease the risk of crashes at the junction of Herbert and Kelvin streets.

It's near Waihopai School and community members are pleased the intersection's being made safer.

They're hoping it'll help children crossing the street to and from the primary school.

The council received 19 written submissions on the proposal, in both support and opposition.

The traffic lights will be installed over the upcoming Christmas holiday break.
