25 year old James Michael Linwood was caught driving with an excess blood alcohol limit of 350mg at Ranfurly on February 19. New Zealand's blood alcohol limit is 50mg for drivers over 20.

Judge Kevin Phillips said Linwood's blood alcohol level was the highest he had seen as a judge. Phillips was suprised the 25 year old had even been able to start the car in his condition.

He says the fact Linwood is a first-time offender helped him avoid a prison sentence. Linwood was sentenced to 180 hours' community work, a 12 month driving disqualification and nine months' supervision.
