The former dean of Otago University's Faculty of Law says he supports students' push to put the brakes on the university's ability to discipline students for off-campus behaviour.

The University's students' association is calling for Campus Watch and the proctor to no longer be allowed to discipline students off-campus, following last month's bong scandal.

Professor Mark Henaghan is leaving at the end of the year to take up a position at the University of Auckland, and says he supports the OUSA's stance.

He caught up with the ODT's Elena McPhee to explain his view.
