An Otago apprentice builder has taken out the top prize at a national building challenge over the weekend.

27-year-old Chris McLean beat 14 other competitors from around New Zealand to take out the Ken Reed Memorial Trophy.

To win, McLean had to complete a portfolio of his work, plus a 20-minute interview with the judges.
