A Southland police search and rescue team have recovered the bodies of two climbers from an area below Marian Peak in the Darren Mountains in Fiordland.

Sergeant Tod Hollebon of Te Anau Police says two climbers were reported missing a few days ago, and had been overdue for 24 hours.

He says a helicopter search located the climbers at the base of a climbing face where they had clearly suffered a fall. Police have contacted the pair's next of kin.
