Southland race commentator Dave McDonald was in the box at Ascot Park at the weekend, 40 years after he called his first race there.

The New Zealand Racing Board organised a function to celebrate his achievement, with many of his colleagues past and present joining in.

And after so long in the job, he says it's not the horses or the dogs that have had the most impact.
