Hundreds of pairs of shoes are being sorted in a collection drive in Dunedin for suicide prevention.

YesWeCare is taking 579 shoes, each representing a Kiwi lost to suicide, on a trip starting in Bluff and Cape Reinga on August 25 and finishing at Parliament on 10 September for International Suicide Prevention Day.

It is the first year the Public Service Association has assisted with the campaign.

Last year Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust assisted with the cause by collecting candles in jars to represent lives lost to suicide.

The shoes hit the road this Friday - after the roadshow the shoes will be donated to a suicide prevention charity.
