The Southland District Council has decided not to appeal to the High Court over its failed bid to create the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail alongside the Oreti River.

The council was initially granted consent but was challenged by Fish and Game, which said the cycle trail would jeopardise an internationally renowned fishing river.

Last year the Environment Court ruled in favour of Fish and Game, removing the council's consent for the trail.

The council is now looking at alternative routes.
