The National Surfing Championships are being held in Dunedin for the first time in five years.

There are 20 different divisions, from junior through to senior, as well a range of boards on the waves.

Organisers say the event has been running smoothly, but it hopes permanent changes can be made to the St Clair Esplanade for safety reasons.
