A survey by Federated Farmers shows the rural sector is plagued by thieves, rustlers and poachers.

The organisation says farmers need to get smarter about security, and work closely with police to deter and catch offenders.

It says not enough farmers are reporting their losses.

The survey revealed 26% of respondents have had stock stolen in the last five years, 25% have had fuel stolen, and almost 2% have had firearms taken.

More than 1,000 farmers nationwide took part in the online survey.
