Timaru has celebrated 150 years since the first meeting of the Timaru Borough Council by lighting up the winter night with an impressive light show.

The Impressive light display lit up the facade of the council building in a rainbow of colours.

As evening fell, a sizeable crowd grew in central Timaru to help celebrate a century and a half of history.

Images of the Timaru district's history were projected onto the building in King George Place.

The Alpine Energy Timaru Brass Band is also celebrating its 150th anniversary, and provided the evening's soundtrack.
