The Department of Conservation is investigating the theft of two bench seats from the Silver Peaks track near Dunedin.

A tramping group recently discovered the seats have been sawn off their posts and stolen.

They were installed by volunteer members of the Green Hut Track Group, who clear and maintain the Silver Peaks track.

Two weeks after the seats were installed earlier this year they were vandalised.

Volunteers repaired them, and now Doc staff are asking for help in identifying the people who stole them.

One seat was funded by the family of the group's founder, and the other celebrated a community achievement.
