The Otago Regional Council has rejected a call from one of its councillors to officially get behind oil and gas exploration off the Otago coast.

The council this afternoon voted to adopt a neutral stance on deep sea drilling exploration.

Councillors voted against a motion put by Councillor Gerry Eckhoff that the ORC support, in principle, deep sea drilling off the coast.

The ORC had received legal advice that passing the motion would compromise its ability to carry out responsibilities under the Resource Management Act, and the Local Government Act.
