Oamaru is hosting the South Island chartered clubs women's fours bowls tournament this week.
The tournament which started on Tuesday, features over 40 teams made up of 172 players from around the South Island.

Diggers are busy out in the ocean at Oamaru as they begin the first stage of the dredging of Oamaru Harbour.
The restoration of the harbour channel's depth and alignment comes after a fishing boat foundered attempting to enter the Harbour last year.
The two-stage half million dollar project requires a three metre channel to be excavated to allow a dredge into the harbour next March.
Next year's dredge work is being timed to prevent the work spreading marine algae and it will be the first time in seven years since the harbour was last dredged.
The Otago Regional Council's long-term plan is to spend one hundred and fifty thousand dollars dredging the harbour every second year.

The North Otago Pony Club has played host to the forty seventh annual Springston Trophy, and celebrated its own seventieth birthday.
The three-day spectacle is the biggest pony club event in the southern hemisphere, and is renowned as the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association’s premier South Island competition.

Oamaru's historic courthouse has been officially reopened at a special ceremony.
Speakers at the event included Justice Minister Andrew Little, Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean and Oamaru lawyer Phil Hope, who spoke on behalf of the New Zealand Law Society.

The North Otago Horticultural Society celebrated their annual spring show over the weekend.
Held at the Scottish Hall in Oamaru, the event featured spring blooms grown around the district.

The historic Phoenix Mill water wheel has finally been lifted and installed at its original site in Old Mill Road in Oamaru today.
It's been seven years since the project began to dismantle and restore the wheel.
This timelapse shows two large cranes manoeuvring the ten metre diameter wheel towards a pit, where it will sit as a visitor attraction.
The area around the wheel will now be landscaped and a car park area and viewing platform also built.
The project came about through the combined efforts of the Phoenix Mill Restoration Trust and Heritage New Zealand.
The wheel is listed as Category 2 and was originally installed at the site of the Phoenix Flour Mill in eighteen seventy eight.
It powered the mill before the building was removed early last century.

Several categories of off-road racers battled it out on a country property near Kurow over the weekend.
The annual New Zealand Offroad Racing Championship’s Southern Dirtfest saw 42 cars competing in a short course event on Saturday..
...Which was followed with an endurance race on Sunday.

Although better known for poultry and forestry, the small town of Herbert, in North Otago, is the unlikely home of the largest display of pipe organs in New Zealand.
Oamaru musicologist and organ builder Doctor Ron Newton has been collecting the instruments for more than two years.
He's put them together in the New Zealand Organ Museum - now housed in the eighteen sixty six original chapel at Saint John's Presbyterian Church.

A Leopard seal has returned to Oamaru Harbour for the second time in just over a week.
Researchers say the seal's return will help give them data to understand this rare visitor to New Zealand shores.

After close to six months of earthquake strengthening and other work, the plastic wrap and scaffolding is being removed from the historic Oamaru courthouse in Thames Street.
The strengthening work involved steel support rods being installed throughout the building.
The building's roof was also replaced and the guttering re-contoured.
Cleaning of the exterior of the Oamaru stone building is now under way.
It's likely court services will return to the building in late September or early October.
The courthouse was closed in late twenty eleven after being classed as earthquake-prone, with court services relocated to the nearby Opera House and then to a portable facility in Humber Street a few years later.
