Track and field competitors from all over the country have congregated to kick off the annual Masters Games in Dunedin.

More than 100 athletes took part in the opening event at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph is leaving Dunedin at the end of this year's Super Rugby season to work in Japan.

Joseph confirmed the move during a media conference at the Highlanders headquarters early this afternoon.

He says making the decision to leave the Highlanders wasn't easy, but it's the necessary progression in his career.

Joseph is in his sixth season with the Highlanders, last year leading the side to its first ever Super Rugby victory.

The 46 year old once played for Japan, including in the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

His earlier All Blacks career spanned 30 matches, including 20 tests.

Basketball Otago creditors are collectively saying goodbye to more than $160,000.

That's the amount of debt the organisation has wiped off its books by paying just 30c in the dollar.

An agreement for that was reached earlier this year, with creditors willing to shoulder some of the franchise's financial woes.

The organisation almost went into liquidation, but a group of campaigners managed to fundraise just over $60,000.

Basketball Otago managers are expecting to turn the books around with a modest surplus this year.

Otago's cricketers have secured second place in a national tournament, after losing to their Auckland counterparts at the weekend.

The Otago Volts were top qualifiers for the twenty 20 final against the Auckland Aces after a successful run.

The Volts were leading the table most of the season.

Yesterday's final at New Plymouth saw the Aces batting first, setting a target of 166 for 6.

The Volts fell 21 runs short, scoring 146 for 9.

But the team's second place finish is a far cry from their bottom of the table placing last year.
