The Chain Hills tunnel is set to open to walkers and cyclists.

The Dunedin Tunnels Trust has raised almost $20,000 from donations and secured more than $400,000 in loans to open up the former Chain Hills railway tunnel, near Wingatui, to cyclists and walkers.

The Trust set up a Givealittle page and an auction for naming rights to the tunnel, and the Dunedin City Council will contribute $57,000 to the project.
