A woman has serious injuries after being hit by a car in South Dunedin this morning.

The pedestrian was struck by the car on a traffic light-controlled crossing outside the Blind Foundation offices on Hillside Road.

The incident happened about 10.30am.

Police are investigating the incident and have been speaking with witnesses.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene and St John says the woman was taken to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department.

The serious crash unit has been notified.
