A World War Two Spitfire pilot who was born in Nelson died last month at age 96.

Alan Peart has been called one of the greatest unsung heroes of World War Two.

He is survived by his wife and children who remember the tales of the fighter ace's exploits.

The moment a kayaker got slapped by a seal with an octopus near Kaikōura has been captured on video and shared on social media.

It all happened when a group of people were out kayaking off the coast of Kaikōura... They're all official content creators for GoPro and had their cameras on at the right moment.

Around 40 kapahaka groups from nearly 30 schools throughout North Canterbury have been performing at the annual festival held at the Ohoka Community Centre near Rangiora this week.

The festival was founded 13 years ago by the small Tuahiwi School.

The event was established because the big Christchurch festival was too expensive for North Canterbury schools to get to and didn't meet the outcomes they wanted.

The local format is flexible enough so school groups can have as much time as they want on stage, tickets are cheaper, and the whole event is family friendly.

Oxford Area School students have been given the opportunity to learn about a mission to Mars with Nasa scientists.

The scientists have spent the week at the school as part of a programme developed by the New Zealand Astrobiology Network to encourage an interest in astronomy.

Over a hundred and fifty alpacas plus more than seventy fleeces were judged at the South Island Alpaca Colourbration Show at Canterbury Agricultural Park at Wigram.
