The stage is set and the contenders are ready to go for October's local body elections.

The list of mayoral candidates for Dunedin has expanded to five.

Green candidate Aaron Hawkins and former ACT MP Hilary Calvert turned up on the nominations list today for the October poll.

Both have already indicated they plan to stand, and both have also been nominated for council seats.

The two join Mayor Dave Cull, Port Chalmers man Kevin Dwyer and independent Andrew Whiley on the list of mayoral hopefuls.

Nominations close on Friday.

Former Otago regional councillor and journalist, writer Neville Peat, has announced he plans to stand for the city council this election.

Peat has worked voluntarily for the Orokonui Ecosanctuary trust board, the DCC Harbour Cone/Hereweka Steering Group and the Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Trust.

He said this morning the council had plenty of debt, and plenty of challenges on economic, social and environmental fronts.

Your word on whether we are doing enough to protect our children

Last week the government released the White Paper for Vulnerable Children.

Part of the document's recommendations include a proposal to create a database of 30,000 'at risk' children, which can be accessed and added to by professionals.

However, the move has been criticised by experts as 'information gathering' rather than active and solution focused.

The 9 Local News Word on the Street team hit the Octagon to ask if you think we are doing enough to protect our children.
