More than 3,000 completed voting papers were returned yesterday, one of the largest numbers in one day so far in the local body elections.

But that has done little to turn around a record low return.

The total of 13,000 voting papers returned means just 15% of residents have voted so far.

That compares with 24% at the same time in 2010.

Voting figures have slumped to around 50% in the last decade, and look set to be well below that figure this year.

Voting closes in just nine days.

Dunedin voters are starting slowly this year, with figures for early returns falling behind the last three elections.

Following the opening of voting recently, 7183 local government voting forms had been returned by Friday.

That number makes up a little over 8% of all votes.

It is less than the 10% at the same point in 2010, 12% in 2007, and 11% in 2004.

Low voter turn-outs have caused concern in the last decade, after dropping below 50% in 2007.

Prices fell 0.5%, though that was after rises totalling 2.6% in the two months before.

The drop came on the back of cheaper fruit, meat and bread, biscuits and breakfast cereals.

Statistics New Zealand says prices are still up 0.3% on a year ago.

There are eight candidates competing for the mayoralty and 34 for seats on the council.

It's been a challenging time for the DCC, with calls to tighten the organisation's belt on new spending and make increasing budget cuts.

So this week's 39 Dunedin News Word on the Street team asked if you are happy with the direction taken by our city leaders - or if you'd like to see some changes.
