The Dunedin City Council has decided to extend the liquor ban to the varsity precinct during the Orientation period.

It's scenes like this from 2009 which the Council, Police and the University hope will be a thing of the past, following the Planning and Environment Committee voting for a month-long liquor ban.

The ban means it will be illegal for people to possess, bring liquor into, or consume alcohol in the designated area.

After today's unanimous council vote the ban is now from Rattray Street in the south of the city, to Bank Street in the North. and from Queen Street across to Anzac Avenue.

The extended ban runs from the 25th of February to the 26th of March.
