Cyclists may be returning to a footpath near you.

A submission to the Transport and Industrial Relations Committee is proposing a law change to allow cycling on the footpath.

For the past 30 years it's been illegal, and in the last decade two people have died in related accidents.

But a Dunedin cycle retailer believes it could be a safer option for some.
