Police are yet to determine whether the discovery of an abandoned car is the same one involved in a hit and run in the early hours of this morning.

Twenty year old student Karl Porter was struck by a south bound vehicle as he crossed Cumberland street near Otago Museum at around 2.30 this morning.

He was rushed to Dunedin Public Hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The vehicle involved in the incident failed to stop at the scene, and Police wish to speak to the driver and any witnesses.

Sergeant Chris Henderson says the vehicle is a black four door car with mag wheels and tinted windows.

He says they can't confirm whether the abandoned car is the one they're looking for, and says investigations are continuing
