National's Wayne Mapp claims a probationary period for new employees is needed in order to boost the country's economic productivity.

Mapp's fronted a Parliamentary Select Committee to support his Probationary Employment Amendment, that could see workers stripped of any rights for the first 90 days of employment.

He says every other OECD country has probation periods and their productivity is better than New Zealand's.
