A Dunedin man was taken to hospital this morning suffering burns to his hands, following a Pine Hill state house fire that police described as spectacular.

Fire service personnel had to remove a gas cylinder from the single storey property, which was left extensively damaged.

Fire safety officer Barry Gibson said three fire engines attended the callout at 10.10am.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
