Dunedin is host to a raft of motorsport competitions this week.

The Silver Fern Rally is underway, with 45 cars racing around the South Island.

There are 26 New Zealand drivers and 19 international entries competing in the classic rally and the historic trophy section.

The event has seven stages, with two being held before the cars reached Dunedin.

After racing on roads in Waikouaiti, Middlemarch and Milton it was the Ford Escorts holding the top spots.

The cars are heading to Gore but will back in Dunedin to finish at the stadium, coinciding with the D1NZ drifting.
