Three Dunedin school pupils had an unusual ride to class this morning, arriving at the gates in a fire truck.

Twelve-year-old Brandon Cleaver, of Tahuna Normal Intermediate, won the ride for himself and two friends.

They were given a briefing on the workings of the fire appliance, before Brandon donned fireman Mike Harrison's jacket and climbed aboard.

He was clearly excited to be arriving at school in such style.

The intermediate pupil was one of many Dunedin children who went into the draw for the ride.

It was the main prize in a fire safety competition run by the New Zealand Fire Service and Channel 39.
