Southern District Health Board chief executive Carole Heatly has announced her resignation, after just over four years in the role.

In a written statement Heatly outlined she was leaving due to personal and family reasons which would impact her ability to lead the proposed rebuild of Dunedin Hospital.

She says the organisation is in a period of development that requires continuity of leadership over several years, a time frame she isn't willing to commit to.

Commissioner Kathy Grant acknowledged Heatly's decision as well as her indication that she'll assist in a successful transition for her successor.

Heatly will finish up on August the 31st.
