A horrific fatal crash near Kingston, has fanned safety concerns regarding the tourist highway,heading into the busy summer season.

One person was killed and 10 injured, one critically, after a car and bus collided on State Highway 6 just south of Kingston yesterday.

Police have confirmed, the car involved was a rental carrying two foreign nationals.

The driver of the car remains in a critical condition.

It was the second fatal crash involving a car and tourist bus in the area, in just over two weeks.

There have been almost 200 crashes on the road since two thousand, including 6 fatal and 12 serious collisions.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult says he is concerned about the coming summer tourist season, when traffic volumes will increase.

The crash occurred on the first day of a new air ambulance arrangement, under which a dedicated rescue helicopter is based in Queenstown.
