Dunedinites woke to find snow on the ground down to sea level for the second time this year.

Police say city motorists drove to the conditions but northern motorway drivers experienced difficulties and a car flipped over in the snow near Middlemarch.

It was wet, heavy snow that blanketed most of Dunedin this morning.

Rain Effects Hydrologist Dave Stewart says the snowfall was no more than 5 or 6 cms deep.

He says unlike the fluffy powdery snow we had two weeks ago, this time alot of the snow was melting before the freeze set in overnight.

He says it's going to freeze once more tonight, with fine weather during the day, a chance of another brief wintry change tomorrow night and then fine conditions through to Thursday.

There are forecasts of a major storm hitting Dunedin towards the end of next week and if it comes, Dave predicts it'll arrive on Friday the thirteenth.
