A costic soda spill forced the closure of Mosgiel's public swimming pool this morning.

Three people, including a young boy and girl, have been referred to doctors after the contaminated water found its way into the supply.

The incident occurred just before lunchtime, during a routine maintenance check of the water treatment plant next to the pool.

The City Council say one to two litres of costic soda was forced down a water service pipe, connected to the pool's bathroom facilities.
An independent engineer is investigating how the incident happened and is expected to report back within the next 24 hours.

People showing symptoms are being urged to seek medical help and contact the City Council as soon as possible.
