Thousands of residents and visitors welcomed the start of the Chinese New Year with local festivities yesterday.

Revellers gathered at the Dunedin Chinese Garden, where they were welcomed by the mayor.

Traditional dancing entertained crowds, and face-painting was popular among children.

It's the Year of the Monkey, and several suitable characters were among the crowd.

Visiting Chinese performers took to the stage, showcasing theatre, music and dance.

The evening finished up with a fireworks display, visible from much of the central city.
