Food prices fell for the first time in five months in August.

Prices fell 0.5%, though that was after rises totalling 2.6% in the two months before.

The drop came on the back of cheaper fruit, meat and bread, biscuits and breakfast cereals.

Statistics New Zealand says prices are still up 0.3% on a year ago.
