Despite rising dairy payouts, the Southland economy is struggling to grow at the same rate as other regions around the country.

Regional GDP figures from Statistics New Zealand show Southland's average growth rate at 2% from 2015 to 2016. Southland groups believe that's a sign Southland needs to diversify its economy.
