NZTA to improve southern highway to Mosgiel

Penguin released after recuperating in hospital

A yellow-eyed penguin found sick and underweight in the Catlins last month has been returned to the wild after recovering in Penguin Place on Otago Peninsula.

The Department of Conservation was alerted to the penguin by members of the public at the end of May.

Lawton wins her mother's seat on ORC

Doctor Ella Lawton appears to have won the seat on the Otago Regional Council left vacant by the death in March of her mother Dr Maggie Lawton.

Preliminary results show Lawton, of Wanaka, leading Gary Kelliher, of Alexandra, by 7184 votes to 5213 votes.

Voting ended at noon today, but votes in transit and special votes are still to be counted.
